The collection, incorporating authentic Dutch steam tram stock, as well as the secondary railway line between Hoorn and Medemblik including buildings, signalling, objects and archival documentation, is the basis for a historically correct and recreationally attractive presentation. The main attractions at the museum are the 'Worlds', immensely high studios in which trains play a prominent role. Each world has its own theme and is an experience in itself. The world of Black Magic begins in the steam era against a backdrop of English cottages. In the guise of an audio tour, the very first Dutch train driver tells visitors the story of how it all started. La Belle Époque focuses on travels to far off places on the Orient Express. Actors bring the era to life. In the third attraction, the visitors themselves step into a carriage and are ridden along, between and under the imposing locomotives. World 4 incorporates the sights and sounds of the workshop, where numerous carriages and locos are being repaired and maintained.

Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 to 17.00 h.
Opened on Mondays during school vacations. Closed on January 1 and April 30.

Mailing address: WGL 1501, Caan van Necklaan 246, 2281 BS RIJSWIJK.

Internet: www.werkgroep1501.nl and the Classic Locomotive Foundation: www.klassieke-locs.nl

A number of engine drivers from the Rotterdam area founded Werkgroep 1501 (the 1501 working group) to preserve electric loco no. 1501. This was one of a batch of seven locomotives that the Dutch railways (NS) purchased from British Rail in 1968. Over a period of sixteen years, no. 1501 and her sisters were mainly used to haul passenger trains between The Hague and Venlo. Thanks to the group's efforts, 1501 was saved and is now in perfect shape again. It appears on the group's annual excursion train, and is also used for incidental charter trains, and sometimes even takes care of scheduled NS services.

In addition to loco 1501, the group is restoring NS electric locos 1201 and 1122. It is hoped that locomotive 1201, will be completed, featuring its original 1951 turquoise livery.

The electric multiple unit (emu) trains of the Mat '54 class, nicknamed Dogheads after their long-nosed front, were a familiar sight on the Dutch network for forty years. These robust four-car trains, completely designed and built in The Netherlands, were popular both with passengers and with staff, because of their comfortable ride and great reliability. The last unit was withdrawn from passenger services in 1996.

Unit no. 766 was presented by NS Reizigers (the Passenger division) to a preservation society founded in 1996, the Stichting Mat'54 Hondekop-vier. Their aim: to preserve one of these units in a serviceable condition. And now, no. 766 is the last remaining four-car Doghead, regularly appearing on charters for its supporters and other railway fans.

This EMU is presently out of service for overhaul. You too can support the preservation of 766, via a donation. If you want to know more, do get in touch.
